This is a picture of an HIV-positive mother bottle- feeding her baby in South Africa. In South Africa, for pregnant women under 20, HIV prevalence rates fell to 15.4% in 2001 (down from 21% in 1998). This suggests that awareness campaigns and prevention programmes are now starting to work. But a major challenge now is to sustain and build on such uncertain success, not least because HIV infection levels continue to rise among older pregnant women.
