This is a picture of HIV-positive couple in South Africa. The South African Department of Health has estimated that in 2001, in the general South African population, 2.65 million women and 2.09 million men between the ages of 15 to 49 were living with HIV. These high prevalence rates show what a significant problem HIV/AIDS is in South Africa with enormous social economic and development implications. The rates also indicate the future burden of HIV associated disease and the difficulties faced by the health system in coping with the provision of adequate care and support.
