This is a picture of a poster that was designed by Gran Fury, an artist's collective which was a part of the AIDS organisation New York Act Up. They wanted to create images that were public and designed to be seen by as many people as possible. The numbers of people becoming infected with HIV and dying from AIDS in New York were increasing, and Gran Fury wanted to make people aware of this in provocative, eye catching and sometimes quite shocking ways. More about the history of HIV and AIDS can be found at http://www.avert.org/historyi.htm.

This photo is part of a larger HIV and AIDS picture gallery. For more HIV and AIDS photos visit http://www.avert.org/historyi.htm
