Data from the South African Department of Health from 2001 shows that 4.71 million people are living with HIV, which gives a prevalence rate of 24.8%. This means that South Africa has more HIV+ people that any other country, and is home to half of all the HIV+ people in the nine southern African countries hardest hit by HIV. Every day, an estimated 1,700 people are newly infected with HIV in South Africa. In 2005, the population is expected to be 16% smaller than it would have been in the absence of AIDS.
